The giant squid are very fascinating, elusive creatures that are very rarely seen and only have been seen a few times and photographed even less. The first known record of a giant squid comes from Denmark in the 1500s. When locals spotted several "curious fish" were found floating in the water. At the time not a whole lot was known about natural science so rather than them thinking it's a cephalopod or a fish video thought they were sea monks which are essentially mermen. But, the very first actual picture of a giant squid is from 1874 when a fisherman accidentally caught one and sold it to a man for $10. His name was Reverend Moses Harvey and he was an amateur naturalist and writer. Harvey actually as gross as it sounds displayed it in his living room. It was the first complete giant squid ever to be put on display. Recently In 2004 we actually got footage of the first live giant squid. Then after that in 2006 we got the first live video of a giant squid. Scientists from The Japanese Science Museum suspended bait under a boat at super deep depths in the hopes of pulling one up and it was a success. This gave people around the world a glimpse of what they truly look like alive. This squid may have only been 24 feet which is actually quite small for giant squid but nonetheless it's a sight to behold. There was still another accomplishment we had to make. We still had never seen a giant squid in its natural habitat until 2012. The research vehicle called Medusa was off of the Gulf of Mexico exploring the deep water and looking at a lot of different deep-sea organisms. Then to the researchers surprise a giant squid came out right in front of the camera everyone was astonished as they should be this is a super rare incredible occurrence. Many scientists hope to uncover a lot about giant squid because as of now they are very under studied. Not many people have had the chance to get a good look at one and really observe the body of it. People don't really know how giant squid live but they have figured out that giant squid can only mate once in their life and that they die slowly after becoming lethargic. I am quite curious how big one of these can truly become. There have been marks on the backs of sperm whales that are giant rings that make people think there could possibly be a humongous squid in the depths of our oceans. Just imagining the kind of battle that a giant squid and sperm whale would have excites me to see that would be a once in a lifetime occurrence. Fun Fact: Giant squids actually have the largest eye in the animal kingdom they can reach the size of a beach ball. This is an adaptation that they acquired due to the fact that they live in such deep dark waters. I really enjoyed researching the giant squid because it's always been an organism that I am fascinated by and always will be curious about.
